How wind actually damages a roof
Wind rarely tears a roof apart all at once. Instead, it works the edges. As wind flows over a roof it creates lift — the same force that gets an airplane off the ground — and that lift tugs upward on the bottom edge of each shingle. Every shingle is held down by a strip of factory sealant and a row of nails. When a gust breaks that seal, the shingle is free to flap, fold, and lift with the next round of wind.
That's why wind damage tends to show up in patterns: along rakes and ridges, on the slopes facing the storm, and anywhere a previous repair left the sealant weak. A roof can lose almost none of its shingles and still have taken real, claim-worthy damage.
Wind creasing: the damage most people miss
A wind crease is what's left behind after wind lifts a shingle, folds it backward, and then lets it drop back into place. For a moment the shingle bends over on itself — and along that fold, the asphalt mat and the fiberglass mat underneath it fracture. The shingle then flops back down and often looks flat again, which is exactly why creasing gets overlooked.
But the damage is done. That crease line is a permanent weak point:
- The mat is broken. The layer that gives a shingle its strength and waterproofing is fractured along the fold, even if the surface looks intact.
- Granules let go. The crease sheds its protective granules first, exposing the asphalt to UV and speeding up aging right at the weak spot.
- Water finds the line. Over the next few freeze-thaw and rain cycles, the crease opens further and becomes a path for water to reach the deck.
Creasing is one of the clearest signs of a genuine wind event, and it's considered functional damage, not cosmetic — the shingle's ability to do its job is compromised. Well-documented creasing across a slope is often what turns a denied or repair-only claim into a full replacement.
A creased shingle counts the same as a missing one
Here's the part homeowners are most surprised by. A shingle that blew off the roof is obviously damaged — you can see the bare spot. But a shingle that got lifted, creased, and dropped back into place is counted the same way in the claims process, even though it's still sitting on your roof looking normal.
That's because the insurance question isn't "is the shingle still up there?" — it's "can this shingle still do its job?" A creased shingle can't. Its mat is fractured and its seal is broken, so it no longer sheds water or resists the next wind the way an intact shingle does. To an adjuster tallying wind damage, each creased shingle counts as a damaged shingle, exactly like a missing one. That's why creasing can push a slope past the threshold for full replacement even when very little actually blew off.

Other signs of wind damage to look for
Creasing is the headline, but a wind event usually leaves a few of these together:
- Missing shingles or tabs — the obvious one, often near edges and ridges.
- Lifted or unsealed shingles that no longer lie flat, or lift by hand with no resistance.
- Granule loss collecting in gutters and at downspout splash blocks after a storm.
- Damaged or displaced flashing around chimneys, skylights, and walls.
- Debris impact marks from branches and windblown material.
- Detached ridge caps, which sit in the most wind-exposed spot on the roof.
Stay off the roof — photograph what you can safely see from the ground and note the date of the storm. Document before any temporary repairs, since photos taken right after the event carry the most weight. Then get a professional assessment to catch the creasing and seal damage that's hard to see from below.
Cosmetic vs. functional — the distinction that decides claims
Insurers separate damage that only affects appearance from damage that affects how the roof performs. Wind creasing lands squarely in the functional category: a creased shingle has lost strength and waterproofing along the fold, so it can't protect the way it's supposed to.
