When a metal bid comes back two or three times higher than the asphalt one, most homeowners have the same reaction: is metal really worth that much more? It's a fair question, and the honest answer is “it depends on how long you're staying and what you value.” Here's how the two actually compare when you strip away the sales pitch.

The short version: architectural asphalt shingles cost far less up front and are easy to repair, but they wear out in 25–30 years. Standing seam metal costs roughly two to three times more, but lasts 50–75 years and shrugs off wind and water. Neither is “better” — they're built for different priorities.

What each one is

Architectural asphalt shingles are the layered, dimensional shingles on most American homes. They're a fiberglass mat coated in asphalt and granules, installed in overlapping courses. Affordable, widely available, and nearly every roofer installs them.

Standing seam metal is a system of interlocking vertical metal panels that run from ridge to eave, with the fasteners hidden under the seams. Because there are no exposed nail holes and the panels shed water in continuous runs, it's one of the most weather-tight roofs you can put on a house.

Why standing seam costs so much more

It isn't just the metal. Standing seam takes specialized labor, precise panel fabrication, and far more custom flashing and trim work — the trim and flashing alone can add 30–40% on top of the panel cost. Fewer crews can do it well, so you're paying for a narrower pool of skilled installers. That's also why it's worth vetting the installer harder on a metal bid than on an asphalt one.
